One of the best parts of the film is a throwaway bit when Goynes and Russo are babysitting (with guns) Wertz's family. There’s more to that story, because there is more to every story here. "And I hear you have the combination to her." Yeah, Charley - a jittery sort - says, but his secretary does. I don’t have the combination, Hertz pleads. Their method of persuasion is to stroll into Wertz’s home and hold his wife and children hostage while one of them takes Wertz to work. ![]() Jones offers them cash for what seems like a straightforward task: persuade Matt Wertz (David Harbour), a General Motors accountant, to grab a document from his boss’ safe. Curt Goynes (Cheadle), Ronald Russo (Del Toro) and Charley (Kieran Culkin) don’t know each other but have shared enemies, because everyone in this 1950s version of Detroit does. Watching them and the rest of the cast try to navigate the caper, while everyone in the film is selling out everyone else, is so satisfying you may not even mind that you have less idea of what’s going on than they do.Ī go-between named Jones (Brendan Fraser) puts together a less-than-dream-team group for a job. Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro are outstanding as low-level crooksĪ couple of low-rent crooks - Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro, both outstanding - stumble onto a job that’s bigger, more complex and far more dangerous than they realize. Yet it is still a movie worth watching, just to study Soderbergh’s direction and to revel in the acting. It’s not as good as “Chinatown,” but few films are. Here, working from a script by Ed Solomon, he has made a kind of “Chinatown” light for Detroit. One of the pleasures of watching a Steven Soderbergh film is that he is such a chameleon in terms of style, technique and story. “No Sudden Move” is an all-star noir homage with a twisty and complicated and possibly nonsensical plot - I’m allowing some room for user error here - that keeps you enthralled till the end anyway.
